The Inspiring Story of an Adivasi Village That Turned Bamboo Into Prosperity

How One Adivasi Village Built a Rs 3.4 Crore Bamboo Economy From Community Forest Rights

What was once a forest that offered little economic security has become the foundation of a thriving community led enterprise in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district. The Gond Adivasi community of Pachgaon has transformed its ancestral forest into a sustainable bamboo economy, generating nearly Rs 3.4 crore over the past decade while improving livelihoods and reducing migration.

The transformation began in 2012 when the village secured community forest rights over 1,006 hectares under the Forest Rights Act. The law gave residents the authority to manage and protect the forest they had depended on for generations. Rather than treating the forest as a source of quick profits, the community adopted a collective approach, placing the management of resources under the village gram sabha.

Bamboo soon became the village’s biggest economic asset. By harvesting and selling it sustainably, the community created a steady source of income and year-round employment for local families. As a result, many residents who once travelled to states like Gujarat and Karnataka in search of work can now earn a livelihood closer to home.

The profits have not been distributed among a few individuals. Instead, the gram sabha reinvests the earnings into projects that benefit the entire village, including better education, improved infrastructure, land purchases and other community development initiatives. During the monsoon, when bamboo harvesting slows, the funds are used to support development work, ensuring employment opportunities continue throughout the year.

Today, Pachgaon stands as a remarkable example of how community forest rights and sustainable resource management can create long term economic growth. By combining traditional knowledge with collective governance, the village has built a resilient local economy while protecting the forest that continues to sustain its future.
