Meet the Kerala Farmer Growing 210 Jackfruit Varieties in One Organic Orchard
In a world where farming often focuses on speed and high-yield production, the humble jackfruit reminds us that nature works on its own timeline. Strong, resilient, and remarkably generous, a single tree can provide food, shade, and livelihood for decades with very little care.
For generations, jackfruit trees have been an essential part of Indian homes and farmlands. From tender young fruit used in curries to sweet, golden bulbs enjoyed fresh, every stage of the fruit has found a place on the dining table. Yet as modern farming increasingly relies on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, many traditional jackfruit varieties have slowly begun to disappear.
Determined to protect this rich natural heritage, Kerala-based conservationist Thomas embarked on a remarkable journey. Concerned about the loss of indigenous varieties and the environmental impact of chemical farming, he began collecting rare jackfruit species from different regions and cultivating them using organic methods.
What started as a former rubber plantation has now evolved into a thriving green sanctuary. Today, Thomas’s orchard is home to more than 210 unique jackfruit varieties, making it one of the most diverse collections of the fruit in the country.
Beyond preserving biodiversity, his orchard serves as a living example of sustainable agriculture, proving that patience, organic practices, and a deep respect for nature can create lasting abundance. His work not only safeguards India’s jackfruit legacy but also encourages home gardeners and farmers to rediscover one of the country’s most versatile and nutritious fruits.
