This results in long periods of darkness in both the towns and the countryside. Much of rural India had no access to electricity less than five years ago, relying instead on kerosene lamps, which were not only unsafe but also harmful to the environment. These 400,000 people had no access to electricity at all, while another 100,000 had a sporadic and intermittent connection.
