He Sold Oranges at a Bus Stand Then Built a School That Changed Hundreds of Lives
Some heroes don’t wear suits, hold power, or make headlines every day.
Some simply sell oranges at a crowded bus stand and quietly change the future of an entire village.
That’s the story of Harekala Hajabba.
Born in a small village in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, Hajabba grew up surrounded by poverty. Education was never part of his childhood because there was no proper school nearby. Like many children from underprivileged villages, survival came before studies.
For most of his life, Hajabba earned a living by selling oranges at a bus stand in Mangaluru. Day after day, he carried baskets of fruit, serving travellers and locals just to make ends meet.
But one moment changed everything.
According to reports, a foreign tourist once asked him the price of oranges in English. Hajabba could not understand the question or respond. What seemed like a small interaction for others became deeply personal for him.
That moment stayed in his mind for years.
Instead of feeling defeated, Hajabba made a life-changing decision: children from his village should never suffer because of a lack of education the way he did.
At that time, Harekala village had no school. Children had to travel long distances just to study, and many eventually dropped out. Hajabba knew that if anything had to change, the village needed its own school.
And so, an orange seller began building a dream.
Despite earning very little, Hajabba started saving tiny amounts from his daily income. Rupee by rupee, day by day, he put aside money for one mission bringing education to his village.
But saving money was only one part of the journey.
For years, he visited government offices, approached local authorities, and continuously pushed for a school to be built. He had no political influence, no formal education, and no financial backing. What he did have was relentless determination.
His persistence finally paid off in 2000 when a primary school was established in Harekala village.
For the first time, children in the area could study close to home.
But Hajabba didn’t stop there.
He continued encouraging families to send their children to school and worked towards improving educational facilities in the village. Over the years, hundreds of children gained access to education because one man refused to give up on a simple but powerful idea.
What makes Hajabba’s journey even more inspiring is his humility.
Even after receiving national recognition, he continued living a simple life. In 2020, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contribution to education and social service.
Yet fame never changed him.
His story became powerful not because he was wealthy or influential, but because he proved that ordinary people can create extraordinary impact.
Harekala Hajabba’s life is a reminder that real change often begins quietly — with empathy, courage, and consistency.
At a time when millions of children still struggle to access education, his journey stands as proof that one determined individual can transform the future of an entire community.
