From Trash to Transformation: How EcoKaari is Weaving Hope from Plastic Waste

At Take Care International Foundation, we believe in celebrating stories that inspire real change—stories that turn challenges into opportunities and waste into wealth. One such powerful story is that of EcoKaari, a social enterprise based in Pune, India, that is not only fighting plastic pollution but also empowering underprivileged women and youth with sustainable livelihoods.

🌱 The Beginning: A Trek That Changed Everything

The founder of EcoKaari, Nandan Bhat, was on a trek in the Himalayas when he noticed something heartbreaking—heaps of plastic waste littering the majestic trails. That moment planted a seed of change in his heart. He asked himself: What if this plastic could be turned into something beautiful and useful?

And that’s where EcoKaari was born—a venture that upcycles plastic waste into handcrafted fabric products, while uplifting communities through skill development and employment.

🧵 The Process: Turning Plastic into Purpose

EcoKaari collects discarded plastic bags, wrappers, and packaging waste from households and corporates. These materials are cleaned, sanitized, and sun-dried. Then, using traditional charkhas (spinning wheels) and handlooms, artisans transform this waste into colorful, durable fabrics—without using electricity, chemicals, or heat. These upcycled fabrics are turned into stunning, functional products: bags, accessories, office folders, home décor, and more—each carrying a message of sustainability and empowerment.

👩‍🎓 Empowering Through Employment

What makes EcoKaari truly exceptional is its heart for people.

The organization trains and employs women, youth, and artisans from low-income backgrounds—many of whom had no stable income or access to opportunities. Through EcoKaari, they learn valuable weaving skills, earn fair wages, and gain the confidence to support their families with dignity.

Today, over 80 artisans are part of this growing movement across Pune and Bellary.

🌏 Reaching the World with a Message

EcoKaari’s mission has touched hearts beyond India, with products being shipped to Australia, Singapore, Dubai, France, the UK, and the USA. Their iconic designs, like the “Maggi Collection” made from noodle wrappers, have turned heads and sparked conversations about creative sustainability.

🎯 Aligned with Global Goals

EcoKaari’s work contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including:

  • SDG 1: No Poverty

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality

  • SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth

  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production

  • SDG 13: Climate Action

It’s a living example of how a single idea can ripple into global impact.
