WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY – OCTOBER 10TH

10th of October of every year is celebrated as World Mental Health Day. As the world progresses and we grow older the more we know about the importance of mental health.

Mental health has come a long way since the 90’s when the World Federation of mental health established the particular day. Along with our self-awareness and sensitivity towards the topic has also changed for the better. As years went by we have gotten better at using terms such as “mad” and “lunatic” uselessly and we have come to better understand that by using such terms so loosely we might be hurting people’s feelings and stigmatizing them. While we have learned a lot and are still learning as a society and individuals we have a long way to go.

It was back in 1992 that the World Federation of Mental Health led by the deputy secretary-general at the time, Richard Hunter, created World Mental Health Day. They didn’t have a precise objective other than to advocate for mental health as a whole.

WHY WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY IS IMPORTANT:

1. Identify the problem

The idea of the mind is an abstract concept and this day allows us to think about our thoughts. We’re evolving beyond outdated perceptions and releasing the stigma of mental health so that we can properly diagnose it and take care of ourselves. With the burden and fear removed from mental health issues, the battle becomes considerably easier

2. Share your pain

This day reminds you that whatever you’re going through, you’re not alone. Too often we think that we’re the only ones facing a hard time. It’s uplifting to know that other people have gone through it and made it out to the other end. It reminds you that you can overcome your own pain.

3. Proper treatment

As we learn more each day and our understanding on the topic grows, so does our ability to speak and seek proper treatment. With the right therapist and if required necessary medication, you can operate on a more efficient level. The more accepting we grow the more we are putting effort into funding the research needed into mental health care and higher global impact.

HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY:

  1. Do group therapy in the workplace
  2. Practice self-care
  3. Follow the theme
